Best BUNN Coffee Maker: Top Models RANKED (Updated For 2021)

Best BUNN Coffee Maker: Top Models RANKED (Updated For 2021)

The BUNN-o-Matic Corporation has been in the beverage game since 1957. That’s 60 years of experience creating durable, reliable products.

An industry leader, many firsts can be traced back to BUNN.

They were the first to use the pour-over method of brewing most commonly used in commercial machines. With this method, a whole pot of hot water is poured over the grounds at once, ensuring optimal extraction and a strong cup of coffee.

But while BUNN has always been a commercial-first company, they’ve also developed some of the most durable, fastest and overall best home coffee makers of the last decade.

You won’t find any cheap plastic Keurig machines in BUNN’s product line.

Not by a long shot.

BUNN definitely isn’t finished innovating either.

  • BUNNlink technology allows for remote usage monitoring
  • BrewWise technology provides superior brewing and extraction

And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

For either home or commercial applications, you can’t go wrong with a BUNN coffee maker.

Before we get to the individual reviews, let's take a look at the rankings.

BUNN Velocity Brew Overview

BUNN has 4 primary versions of this series:

  • BUNN GR
  • BUNN BX
  • BUNN BT
  • BUNN NHS

(There are variations of these model names such as GRW and GRB where the last letter corresponds to unit color, white and black, respectively.)

All of these models have the same features common among all Velocity Brew machines, so how do you choose between them? Try this simple guide:

  • Do you want the cheapest model? Pick whichever has the lowest price, probably the GR.
  • Do you want to save as much energy as possible? Pick the BX or BT.
  • Do you like to keep your coffee hot for long periods of time? Pick the BT’s thermal carafe.
  • Do you want the convenience of the swivel lid? Pick the NHS and save that vertical space.
  • Do you live at high altitude? BUNN has a specific model for that — the BTX-B.

Cons of the BUNN Infusion Series

What We Don't Like

Cons of BUNN Infusion Series

  • Doesn’t come with airpot
  • Doesn’t function well above 5,000-foot elevation

BUNN Infusion Series Overview

The cafeteria at my office has to support the 2,000 employees who work there every day, and they have 5 of these running at almost all times. Given that this model brews up to 11.9 gallons (45 L) of coffee per hour, you can see why my company chose the BUNN Infusion Series.

With BUNN’s BrewWISE intelligence with pre-infusion and pulse brew (aside: I love how companies brand their technology) you get maximum extraction of your coffee grounds.

And as someone who consumes coffee from one of these behemoths every day, I can attest that this is just about the highest quality mass-volume coffee maker you’ll find.

Tech-wise, this model is compatible with BUNNlink. No, that’s not a new dating app — it’s BUNN’s machine-to-machine monitoring program. With BUNNlink your machine’s usage data will be transmitted to BUNN for monitoring and analysis, leading to better customer service by BUNN and their service techs.

Read more about BUNNlink here.

Not all BUNN commercial brewers require plumbing, but this one does.

  • 20-90 psi (138-521 kPa)
  • Supplied with 3/8″ male flare fitting

It’s dual-voltage adaptable and can operate at 120V/15 amp or 208-240V/20 amp. The 120V model requires 2 wires plus ground service rated 120V, single-phase, 60 Hz. An internal terminal block is configured for connection to a 3 wire plus ground.

At 48 lbs it’s massive, but you’re buying this unit to sit stationary somewhere. You want the weight. It’s evidence of the supremely high-quality stainless steel construction this machine proudly boasts.

You’ll need to purchase the airpots separately.

A reliable, affordable commercial brewer capable of brewing 60 oz carafes up to 3.8 gallons per hour, the heavy-duty BUNN VP17 Series brewers are encased in stainless steel and require no plumbing for portable use.

Pros of the BUNN VP17 Series

What We Like

Pros of BUNN VP17 Series

  • Completely portable with no plumbing required
  • Stainless steel construction
  • High quality hot coffee
  • Isn’t going to break down any time soon

Cons of the BUNN VP17 Series

What We Don't Like

Cons of BUNN VP17 Series

  • Doesn’t come with decanters
  • Will struggle to brew advertised 14.8 L per hour
  • Doesn’t function well above 5,000-foot elevation
  • No On/Off switch

BUNN VP17 Series Overview

The BUNN VP17 Series is best suited to commercial uses that don’t require mass quantities of coffee to be available at once — think diners and restaurants.

BUNN states that this machine brews up to 3.8 gallons (14.8 L) per hour.

Is this actually the case?

In reality, this unit takes about 15 minutes to heat up enough to brew a large 3.0 L airpot. To brew the next airpot you need to wait another 15 minutes.

To get BUNN’s fully advertised 14.8 L of coffee per hour, you’ll have to diligently sequence your brews so as not to miss a single second. More realistically, you’ll probably brew about 12 L per hour.

Like the other commercial coffee makers listed, VP17 doesn’t come with the decanters, but it will work with any standard 64 oz decanter. You can find them for around $10-$15 apiece on Amazon.

The warming plate is extremely hot, so you won’t have a hard time keeping your coffee scalding hot, but you’d better make sure you don’t leave less than half a pot there for very long.

Pros of the BUNN VPR Series

What We Like

Pros of BUNN VPR Series

  • 29 lbs, self-contained, and portable
  • Durable stainless steel construction
  • Brews high quality coffee up to 3.0 L (0.80 gal) per serving
  • 2-year warranty

Cons of the BUNN VPR Series

What We Don't Like

Cons of BUNN VPR Series

  • Doesn’t come with required carafes or airpots
  • Will struggle to brew advertised 14.8 L per hour
  • Doesn’t function above 5,000 feet elevation

BUNN VPR Series Overview

BUNN’s compact and completely portable commercial brewer, the VPR Series is perfect for keeping moderate quantities of coffee hot for self-service purposes.

These brewers are compatible with two different styles of serving containers:

  • Standard thermal or glass serving carafes
  • BUNN airpots ranging from 1.9-3.0 L (0.50-0.79 gal)

Unfortunately, the carafes and airpots aren't included in the listed price.

With durable stainless steel construction, the VPR Series will withstand the wear of being moved around but has some heft to it.

At 29 lbs it weighs more than the 24 lb commercial brewers BUNN produces to brew a typical 64 oz pot, such as the VP17.

Pros of the BUNN My Cafe MCU

What We Like

Pros of BUNN My Cafe MCU

  • Works for K-Cups, ground coffee, tea & hot water
  • Brews in under 1 minute
  • No paper filters needed
  • 2 year warranty
  • Coffee is hot!

Cons of the BUNN My Cafe MCU

What We Don't Like

Cons of BUNN My Cafe MCU

  • Non-removable 14 oz water reservoir
  • No On/Off switch
  • Only single servings up to 14 oz

BUNN My Cafe MCU Overview

Packed with features in a conveniently small design, the BUNN My Cafe MCU Single Cup, Multi-Use Brewer provides a ton of functionality.

The 4-drawer system allows you to choose your brew with basically any beverage:

  • K-Cup pods
  • Ground coffee
  • Tea pods or bags
  • Hot Water only for loose-leaf tea, hot cocoa, and more

And let me tell you: This coffee gets hot, even after adding milk or cream.

The Pulse Brew technology lets those who love strong coffee get something more to their taste, and overall the quality of the brew is impressive given this coffee maker does more than just make coffee.

While the sleek profile is great, the look is rather plain and boring. It definitely isn’t the most stylish of kitchen appliances.

Overall, there aren’t many moving parts on the BUNN My Cafe MCU, but that aids in its longevity. The internal water tank is made of stainless steel and of superior quality. Should you run into any issues, BUNN offers a 2-year warranty.

Removing the drawer attachments for cleaning is a breeze. However, the biggest complaint about cleaning is that removing spent grounds from the ground coffee drawer can sometimes be a pain.

Unlike Keurig devices, there's no internal filter that needs to be replaced every few months. Should you run into a clogged valve, cleaning the internal components requires a little bit of precision (and a bent paperclip), but there is a great YouTube video that can help you with it.

About The Coffee Maven
bryan de luca
Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
