What's The Difference Between Nespresso Machines?

If you're asking yourself, "What's the difference between Nespresso machines?" then this section is for you.

  • Nespresso Product Line: The first (and most important) difference is which Nespresso product line each machine belongs to, OriginalLine or VertuoLine. The next section, "The 2 Types of Nespresso Machines," explains the differences in detail.
  • Brew Sizes: Most Nespresso machines brew three espresso-sized servings: 0.85 oz ristretto, 1.35 oz espresso, and 3.70 oz lungo. However, some don't offer the smaller ristretto or larger lungo sizes, so make sure to read the Brew Sizes section of each Nespresso machine review below. Nespresso VertuoLine machines also offer long coffees from 7-17 oz, which is explained in the next section.
  • Milk Frother: Most Nespresso machines don't come with a milk frother, though some offer a bundle that includes the machine plus an Aeroccino frother. Other machines offer an integrated frother to brew lattes, cappuccinos, and other specialty beverages at the push of a button (Lattissima Series). Nespresso's most premium models in the Creatista Series take that a step further and offer a cafe-style frothing wand for a more hands-on experience.
  • Wireless Connectivity: Some machines, like the Prodigio, allow you to connect to the machine via Nespresso's app. Though nifty, you can't use the app to brew your coffee remotely. It's mostly just good for easy capsule re-ordering.
  • Case Material: Most Nespresso machines are made of an ABS plastic polymer that's much thicker and more durable than you'll find on other single-serve coffee makers. Some Nespresso machines, like the Pixie an, come with a stainless steel case, which is sleeker, more stylish, and scratch-resistant.
  • Power Consumption: Power is measured in Watts and ranges from around 1100W-1750W depending on the model. Higher Wattage means more power, which means faster heat-up times from a cold start and quicker, better frothing (on machines with a frother). It also means more power consumption, which isn't a critical difference for most people but may be important in some situations. For example, people using their Nespresso machine in RVs or older homes with outdated electrical wiring may want model that consumes less power.

There are other small differences between Nespresso machines, but those are the ones to know.

The 2 Types of Nespresso Machines

There are two types of Nespresso Machines: OriginalLine and VertuoLine.

  • OriginalLine machines are the originals (duh) and, in our opinion, are still the best.
  • VertuoLine machines debuted in October 2015 with a capsule-scanning system that lets you brew 5 different types of capsules for everything from 0.30 oz ristretto shots to full 17 oz long coffees.

Here are the main differences between each type of Nespresso machine in an easy-to-read table:

FeatureOriginalLineVertuoLine

3rd Party CapsulesAvailableNot available
Nespresso Capsule Cost$0.75-$0.85$0.90-$1.25
3rd Party Capsule Cost$0.35-$0.75None

That's a lot of advantages to OriginalLine machines, and that's why they're our favorites.

But that doesn't mean VertuoLine machines are bad!

  • When To Choose OriginalLine: If you're mostly an espresso or specialty beverage drinker, you definitely want an OriginalLine machine. Even if you enjoy the occasional longer coffee, an Americano (espresso + hot water up to 6.75 oz) can be a close approximation that's actually even richer.
  • When To Choose VertuoLine: If you're mostly a tall coffee drinker who wants a Nespresso machine for flexibility to enjoy an espresso every now and then, VertuoLine machines were made for you.

Beyond the two main types of Nespresso machines, there are "sub-types" offering different features, such as wireless connectivity for easy capsule reordering, integrated frothers for one-touch specialty beverages, and more.

We've rated and ranked each option you need to know about. Without further ado, here are our official reviews for the Best Nespresso OriginalLine Machines.

About The Coffee Maven
bryan de luca
Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
