Nespresso Gran Lattissima Overview

Nespresso has two lines of capsule-based espresso machines:

  • OriginalLine: Their original line (duh) that used a 19 bar pump to extract shots from capsules
  • VertuoLine: Their new line that uses Centrifusion (rapid capsule spinning) to extract shots from barcode-enabled capsules but also brews standard coffee up to 17 oz

For our money, OriginalLine machines are better than VertuoLine machines because their pump produces more authentic espresso, the coffee tends to be hotter, and there's no barcode scanning system meaning you can find less-expensive third-party capsules.

For our money, OriginalLine machines are better than VertuoLine machines because their pump produces more authentic espresso, the coffee tends to be hotter, and there's no barcode scanning system meaning you can find less-expensive third-party capsules.

And among OriginalLine machines, there are 2 series that stand above all others:

  • Lattissima machines with integrated frothers that brew specialty beverages with the push of a single button
  • Creatista machines with integrated frothing wands for a more manual frothing experience, as if you were a true barista

The Lattissima One is part of that first series (obviously), which is made up of 5 different models:

We'll compare all 5 in the buyer's guide section below.

This Gran Lattissima is the newest of these 5 Lattissima models with the most modern design that weighs a touch less than the similarly spec'd Lattissima Pro. The biggest difference is the Pro's digital touchscreen display and larger spent capsule capacity while the Gran has more preset beverage recipes:

  1. Ristretto
  2. Espresso
  3. Lungo
  4. Hot foam
  5. Hot milk
  6. Cappuccino
  7. Latte macchiato
  8. Caffe latte
  9. Flat white

Objectively, the Gran Lattissima is newer with more features, but many users prefer the Lattissima Pro with its digital touchscreen.

Pros
  • Actual pump pressure is better than VertuoLine Centrifusion
  • Integrated one-touch milk frother makes specialty beverages easily
  • Large spent capsule capacity
  • Solid internal construction means it won't break down quickly
  • Can used 3rd-party capsules
Cons
  • Stated 19 bars is inconsistent

The latest and greatest Lattissima model from Nespresso, the Gran Lattissima has the largest water reservoir (44 oz) and milk container (17 oz) in a slightly smaller package than the Lattissima Pro with 3 more preset beverages. It's a formidable model and probably the best in the entire Lattissima Series.

If you don't need all those specs, feel free to downgrade to either the Lattissima Pro or Lattissima Touch. (Going to the Plus or the One represents a much steeper drop-off.)

If you want the option to have manual control over your frothing, you'll want to check out one of the 3 Creatista Series machines.

About The Coffee Maven

Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
