Frequently Asked Questions

How to Buy the Best Milk Frother for You

Let’s help you figure out your needs!

Cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate and/or something else?

Some milk frothers are good at everything, and some are better at one thing.

For example, many of the frothers below come with multiple discs or whisks, which are specially designed for either cappuccino foam or latte foam.

Others only come with one whisk.

Those that come with one whisk (in my opinion) tend to struggle to make quality latte foam because they’re less able to achieve that smooth, silky texture.

If you’re a frequent latte drinker, you’ll probably want a milk frother with a dedicated latte whisk!

One-button automatic, manual handheld, or integrated steam frother?

For the most part, frothers come in 3 different types:

  1. One-button automatic frothers
  2. Manual handheld frothers
  3. Steam frothers integrated into espresso machines

Progressively, those go from “least complicated” to “most complicated,” and you won’t find any integrated steam frothers on this list.

Check out our list best espresso machines or our complete guide to Nespresso machines for that.

One-button automatic frothers are the simplest to use — just pour in milk and push a button.

Manual handheld frothers require you to manipulate heated milk with a foot-long, handheld device that requires a little more feel.

How important is high-quality froth to you?

I know, I know. It’s important.

But really, how important?

Are you looking for something affordable and reliable to add some character to your morning coffee?

Are you a discerning latte drinker who expects nothing but the best?

Or maybe you’re a frequent dinner party hoster who wants to impress your friends and family with rich, after-dinner cappuccinos.

I ask this question as a prelude to the next...

What’s your price range?

The ever-important question:

  • You can spend four figures to get a dual boiler espresso machine that makes barista quality foam.
  • You can spend three figures for a do-it-all, one-touch frother.
  • You can spend two figures for a basic frother that gives you better foam than you had yesterday.

(Which, probably, was none.)

About The Coffee Maven
bryan de luca
Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
